tsk zicka kartuzija

This weekend we went for a short family trip to visit the remnants of an old Carthusian monastery Zicka kartuzija (Zice Charterhouse). Our plan was to start a series of explorations of Slovenia’s the best, the top and the oldest. And with me sketching away too. So here, in the remote and cold valley some 50 kilometres to the south west of Maribor the first monks arrived from the far away Grand Chartruse monastery in France in the 12th century. Although not the oldest monastery in the country, this is the oldest Carthusian monastery in this part of the world and the first Carthusian monastery outside France and Italy. The first farmacy in Slovenian territory is documented here. And there is also one other ‘record’, the oldest pub – Gastuž- in Slovenia stands at the entrance to the monastery, serving lovely Monastery herb tea among others. We explored the ruins and tried to imagine the grounds as they were 850 years ago. There used to be an extensive medieval library too. The monks would transcribe the books and the itinerant painters would illuminate them. I wonder if they did any outdoor sketching too.

Interestingly enough, in the museum on the grounds I found the Founding document, which was signed in the year 1165 and sealed with a similar seal as the Maribor 1164 Document.
